Suicide rates have increased by 30 percent in the past decade and it is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S and a leading cause of death worldwide. Among the most vulnerable are those suffering already from mental illness and addiction. Suicide, addiction, and depression have a very close and interconnected relationship. More than 90 percent of individuals who lose their life to suicide suffer from depression, have a substance abuse disorder, or both. Other mental health issues such as anxiety and PTSD, combine to form a vicious cycle that all too often leads to suicide.
Each day one U.S. active duty military dies from suicide and the second leading cause of death (second only to heart disease) of US veterans is suicide. In fact, 13 percent of all veteran deaths are by suicide. Not only is the book timely and needed by many, it is a deeply personal story that is part memoir and part spiritual journey. Through my own spiritual and physical healing, my commitment is to help others navigate the often-undiscussed and painful waters of suicide survival. Equally important, that life is still worth celebrating and honoring. We have so much to offer the world. Experiencing the death, regardless of the form, can be transformative. And surprisingly, it can breathe new life in unexpected and surprising ways.
